Aunt Sally at the Village Fete by Alethea Garstin (1894-1978)

Oil on board, framed.

40 x 31cm

Aunt Sally was a hugely popular game played at fetes and fairs in Cornwall. The idea was simply to knock the Aunt Sally doll cleanly off a swivel on the top of a post by throwing wooden sticks at it. In this painting we can see rope netting designed to catch the sticks behind Aunt Sally.

Provenance: Exhibited at The Molesworth Gallery, Dublin (Catalogue no.14) circa 2001.

Sotheby's Billingshurst studio sale 25 October 2000.
