There is a freshness and a primitive purity in Julian's art which follows a broad tradition in naive Cornish art that includes the work of Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Winifred Nicholson, Fred Yates, Bryan Pearce, Joan Gilchrest, Daphne McClure, Emma McClure, Julian Dyson, Linda Weir and Simeon Stafford. His work is colourful, cheerful, often "edgey" and sits squarely in the 'Outsider Art' genre which is variously described as naive, primitive or folk art.
