Waves Breaking on the Cornish Coast by David James (1860-1897)

Oil on canvas, 10" x 16"

Attribution verso.

A London resident, James exhibited at the RA from 1881-1898.  He was a marine painter, more interested in pure studies of the sea rather than topographical coastal views, and was particularly good at painting waves. Much of his work was painted on the Cornish coast, and his titles reveal this interest. Sending-in addresses for the artist include Plymouth (1883), Bowden, Devon (1885), Dalston (1886) and London (1892).
